Cadaveric Embalming -

Cadaveric embalming is an essential process in the field of anatomy, allowing for the preservation of the human body (cadaver) for educational and research purposes. This meticulous procedure ensures that anatomical structures remain intact, providing invaluable learning opportunities for medical professionals and students alike.

It has been practiced for centuries, evolving into a precise and standardized technique in modern times to slow down the decomposition of cadavers. 

Instruments Used in Cadaveric Embalming -

  1. Embalming Table
  2. Arterial Cannula and Trocar
  3. Embalming Machine
  4. Surgical Instruments (Scalpel, Forceps, Suture Materials)
  5. Drainage Tubes
  6. Cavity Fluid Injector and Trocar
  7. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Chemicals Used in Cadaveric Embalming -

  1. Formaldehyde
  2. Methanol or Ethanol
  3. Phenol Compounds
  4. Humectants (Glycerin, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, etc.)
  5. Humectants (Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Polysorbate 80,etc.)
  6. Water

Preparation of the Cadaver -

Positioning: The body is typically placed in a supine position on an embalming table, with the arms at the sides and the head supported on a headrest.

Cleaning and Disinfection: The body is thoroughly cleaned to remove any surface contaminants. Areas with visible soil or debris should be cleaned using a mild disinfectant solution.

Methods of Cadaveric Embalming -

A. Arterial Embalming: This is the cornerstone of the embalming process. It involves the introduction of embalming fluid into the arterial system to replace blood and preserve tissues. This is the most widely used method. 

Procedure: An embalming cannula is inserted into a major artery (commonly the carotid or femoral) using a trocar and pointed guide wire. This allows for controlled distribution of the embalming fluid.

Embalming fluid, a mixture of formaldehyde, methanol, water, and other chemicals, is injected, displacing the blood.

Simultaneously, blood is removed through a drainage tube inserted into a nearby vein.

Purpose: Arterial embalming preserves the body's tissues, slows decomposition, and restores a life-like appearance. 

B. Cavity Embalming: This method supplements arterial embalming by treating body cavities (such as the thoracic and abdominal cavities) with a concentrated cavity fluid is introduced.

Procedure: A trocar is used to puncture the body cavities. Concentrated cavity fluid is introduced to ensure throughout preservation. The fluid is massaged within the cavities to distribute it effectively.

Purpose: Cavity embalming ensures that internal organs and spaces are adequately preserved.

C. Surface Embalming: Surface embalming is used to treat areas that may not have received sufficient preservation through arterial and cavity embalming.

Procedure: Embalming gels or concentrated fluids are applied directly to the affected areas. This method is often used for localized decomposition or areas where embalming fluids may not have reached effectively.

Purpose: Surface embalming helps address specific areas of concern and ensures comprehensive preservation

D. Hypodermic Embalming: This method involves injecting embalming fluid directly into tissues using a hypodermic needle.

Procedure: A small gauge needle is used to inject embalming fluid into localized areas, such as tumors or areas with fluid accumulation. This method is often employed in cases where arterial embalming may not be sufficient.

Purpose: Hypodermic embalming targets specific areas for preservation.
